What Is A Pet Nat?
What is a Pet Nat? Well, I’m glad you asked as we have just launched our 2024 The Part Pet Nat and we can’t wait for you to try it!
Pet Nat is having a picnic with friends, sitting on the lawn, basking in the sunshine, and eating charcuterie. It’s the soft fizz and funky wine that screams ‘weekend’ with every sip.
Pet Nat, or Pétillant Naturel in French, translates to “naturally bubbling” and that’s exactly what it is. A Pet Nat can be comprised of any grape varietals and while you may see it around more often since it’s re-emergence in the early 2010’s, it is an old winemaking style that actually predates Method Champenoise, dating back to the 1530’s in Southwestern France. They are made by the ‘Ancestral Method’ which involves pausing the first ferment occurring in tank, sending the half-fermented wine to bottle, and letting the wine complete its ferment in bottle which traps naturally occurring CO2. This results in a spritzy, sometimes residually sweet, often hazy wine due to the lack of filtering.
The only trouble is when pairing Pet Nat’s with food. Since they are made of any grape and can range drastically in flavour profile, there isn’t any hard and fast rule as to what you should pair with them. It really is dependent on the Pet Nat you choose.
What about our newly released 2024 The Party Pet Nat you may ask? Well, this low-added-preservative, bubbly bottle of joy is a very versatile choice of Pet Nat. Being a Riesling/Marsanne blend, it would pair beautifully with cheese and charcuterie like most wines as an aperitif. However, if you are searching for a heartier more unique pairing; Thai green curry, Chinese style pork belly or even salt and pepper squid are must-haves when drinking The Party Pet Nat with friends.
